For most high achievers, life is overloaded. Today many of us struggle with feeling overwhelmed and over-extended, and we feel that every day is a ‘race against the clock’. We are constantly playing ‘catch-up’ with the whirlwind combination of meetings, emails, deadlines, family commitments and the simple daily necessities of taking in food and getting from A to B.

Yet, ‘balance’ is not as simple as better time management, but requires better boundary management where we make choices and enjoy (rather than feel torn or guilty) about these choices. When we are so busy being busy, with distractions and perceived obligations everywhere it’s too easy to lose track of who we are and what’s important.

Improving this area will give us a sense of control, rather than being at the mercy of our schedule or at the whim of others. By recognising the opportunities we have to turn off, or simply walk away, we can become in control of our own schedule. To do this, set clear expectations with yourself and others on what is possible and manageable. Create a rhythm to your week which isn’t leaving you depleted. Through creating even a tiny bit of space between activities, you can give yourself the chance to pause and reflect before moving forward in a manner which is controlled and in control. And by doing so you encourage the ‘human being’ rather than the ‘human doing’.
