This article in Management Today discusses the shift in priorities that every new mother experiences. Reasearch by Dr Lynne Millward Purvis found that women undergo three 'identity shifts' when becoming mothers. Before leave working mothers have an increasing feeling of being undervalued and after giving birth they are forced to acquire a 'mother identity' which shifts goalposts and on return efforts need to double in order to rebalance life with this new shift.
